Sector Learning Facilities (SLFs) in my mentoring team are fortunate to get large amounts of training, especially at this time of the year, as the teachers are supervising exams. My District Education Manager (DEM) has facilitated for me to lead 3 days each week of training during the holidays with 2 days of 1:1 mentoring.
Learning by doing. My SLFs learning to facilitate the use of Flash Cards to support P2-P3 Number work. Full engagement not a phone out anywhere!
Its gradual process, getting them all fully engaged,. Baby steps. I discovered that their VSO living allowance is significantly more money than a class teacher receives, so they are not all bought into the VSO mission!
Leading a session to help SLFs with setting smart targets for teachers.
The most powerful teaching tool in the toolkit is the ‘Show Me’ boards. In this session I showed SLFs how to make ‘Show Me’ boards from scrap and then a variety of activities they can show teachers that will advance the learning. My Manager (left) came all the way from Kigali to support the group activities (and enjoy the hotel meals).
I am a retired deputy headteacher on a journey with VSO to help teachers in Rwanda develop learner centred approaches in the classroom. I will do this by leading a team of mentors who will work alongside teachers.
